Notes:

四月病 (shigatsubyou) is a term commonly used by college students in Japan to describe the optimistic and enthusiastic mentality that students have when they first start school in April. They work hard, pick up tons of classes, and basically embrace the novelty of doing lots of interesting work, even if it's challenging. Eventually, though, that transitions into 五月病 (gogatsubyou), which is the point in every students' life where they are absolutely sick of the constant barrage of classes, work, expectations, and due dates.

So what he's saying here is that he's still in that "optimistic, hard-working Miyavi" stage and not the "Everyone wants something from me and I'm going emo" stage that he indulges in every now and then.

Actually, 雅び isn't being used as a play on his name. It *IS* his name and always has been since DLQ days. Back then remember he didn't spell his name "Miyavi" yet, but was known as "Miyabi". The hiragana び seems to have a tendency to be there or not there depending on the preference of the writer, but when you look up the kanji in the dictionary, it notes the び as usually being not furigana and beside the kanji 雅.

What is a pun here, however, is 雅びずむ together. Try saying the word aloud and you get "Miyavizm" or "Miyavism". Although, it is the name of his first album, that's not what is meant here. What is meant is that this little blurb here is just his little quirk for the moment. Such as if I'm hooked on something or there's a certain peculiarity about me it could be called a "Yileism" or like just something that relates mostly to me.

Hm. What I meant by a "play on his name" was that I assumed that the sign off was a kind of play on words like you described about the "zumu." ^_^ Doesn't 四月病の雅びずむ sound like it may be an idiom or phrase that just doesn't translate directly into English? An April disease?

I did know that Miyabi 雅び is what he used to go by (was a fan of DLQ before I knew jack shit about Japanese language~), but I didn't notice the "Miyavism" thing though. Thanks for that! Fixing it ASAP~ ^^

The shigatsu yamai alone suggests it may be, but that would take some amount of cultural knowledge to realize anything special about the month of April.

why yamai, not byou? I have no idea what is it, but quite a few japanese bloggers seem to suffer from that. And from gogatsu byo too.

Because for one shigatsu is its own word. Just because kanji are next to each other doesn't mean that they're a combination and you can just use the on-yomi. It's possible it could be byou, but more often than not if there's already a combination, then the kanji is probably "stand alone" so it's a lot less likely. Most especially if the two words don't really seem like they would "go together". It's a common mistake for a lot of people learning Japanese to put all the kanji they see next to each other into on-yomi without thinking about it first. It's only much later that they learn it might not be.

But anyway, I was getting at that a lot of times you have to really check though and reference other things to be precisely sure which reading it is, but sometimes it's a lot safer when you're making a reference to something to just use the kun-yomi because at least they'll probably better understand what you're talking about. It's a bit harder to understand when you're not sure especially when you're speaking when you use all on-yomi readings because a lot of on-yomi are similar to each other so it's harder to deciper sometimes.

So I've discovered the meaning of 四月病. The anonymous commentor was correct--it's shigatsubyou, the kind of positive "I can do anything!" mentality that students always have when the school year begins, which eventually distegreates into gogatsubyou, the "Fuck this shit--I hate working" mentality that most college students (including myself) are at now. I was reading some of the blogs where the term came up and one commentor asked what the term meant. Here was the reply, to clarify things:

うちの大学特有の言い方で「四月病」っていう単語が存在するよ。

意味としては五月病の反対で、意気揚々と始まった新生活、やる気に満ちあふれている新入生諸君は勉強に熱意を持っており、単位取得難易度にかかわらず興味のある授業を申告できるだけ申告する。最初のうちは１限だろうが連続だろうが関係なくすべて出るのだが、次第にやる気がなくなっていき、GW後くらいには五月病で完全にアウト。結局四月病のせいで単位はとれなくなり、留年してしまいましたとさ、めでたしめでたし…っていう類のものｗ

まぁそれに…近いかな？ｗ

XD Yup you do. There's a lot to learn when learning another language though just because language is also culturalized so you have to slowly pick up the references and sensibility that a native speaker would have been born with.

It's no problem at all! His message romanized reads: "Aa, nugitee."

Nugu is the verb for undressing and -tai is the desiderative form, so the normal phrase would be "Aa, nugitai," but a more conversational, colloquial (and masculine) way of saying -tai is to change it to a long -tee (sounds like 'teh'), which is what he does here.

don't you think maybe he meant he wants to take off the face mask thing? you know like april disease is like hay fever/allergies isn't it? lots of japanese people have it and have to wear those face mask things. i've seen miyavi wear it before and he's compained about it before too. (maybe it's a different verb of "take off" for that kind of article of clothing, but i thought it was the same)

Hey! I love having another eye look over my posts. I'm nowhere near fluent, so I really appreciate it!

I understand that "nugu" can be used as a verb meaning "to take (something) off" in general, but the times I've seen it used without a direct object the intended meaning was "to undress." Have you encountered it a different way? How did you translate this particular line (that is, what was he referring to in your mind)?

there are several verbs for "put on" and a few for "to take (something) off" and actually i don't think i know them all at this hour of the night (ww) um..
脱ぐ、外す、I think there might be another one...

But you know, like 脱ぐ can also be used figuratively. I was wondering about 四月病 earlier, (I feel so enlightened, thanks for your research! 感謝) so maybe he means like taking off stress. don't you just LOVE how Japanese makes it so easy to be vague?
